Sonex #1236 a scratch built standard gear center stick.powered by a 3000cc 120 hp Corvair made its first flight October 28,2016. This is my second plans built airplane.the first was a pietenpol air camper that I still fly.the sonex is a very different experience from that but a real joy to fly. Looking forward to a lot of fun travel with it.Thanks go to my wonderful and patient wife Brenda who helped when I needed it and gave lots of encouragement along the way! Thanks to you guys at sonex for a great set of plans to build from.

Sonex 1578 flew for the first time yesterday and received AC on 10-14-16. I went up and done small turns and pitch control then proceed higher to do slow flight and pre stall check. I kept the flight to about 30 minutes with a pretty decent landing. The planes flights very well, it is light on the stick. I plan on going over it well before my next flight. It took me just over 4 years to build. I used the Hummel 2400 VW for the engine and Prince carbon fiber P Tip prop. I would like to thank my wife Janet, my Friends that helped Jared and Herbie for that needed helping hand. I also need to thank Harold Reynolds who is building a Sonex and gave me very needed guidance. Thanks again to Sonex and all for helping me get this project in the air.

On September the 14th, (Birthday Gift) my four and a half year project Sonex SN# 773 (N773SX) took to the air. This was the second plane I built with the first one being a Waiex SN# 38 which I flew for 414 hours in about 5 years. The project was worth every minute and as for the joy and thrill of the first flight, absolutely amazing. I flew for 34 minutes in the pattern and then landed. To those of you out there still building and looking for motivation to complete your projects, trust me when I say, get on with it, it is worth every minute of the build when you make that first flight. Make it happen folks, make it happen. To John Monnett and his great staff - not much I can add to what they have accomplished. Thank you Sonex. To my wife, I see the honey do list on the refrigerator door has grown substantially over the last 4.5 years, if you stop buying me Sonex kits to build I promise I will get to your list. Seriously, thanks for all your help and support.

I bought this as a nearly complete kit, but put 800 hours into changes/repairs prior to FAA approval. Wonderful airplane, now with 109 hours in less than 8 months. Most fun flying I have ever had. I had some issues with some parts that should not have been used in the Corvair engine, but after they were replaced the engine is perfect. Thanks John Monnett and team. I recently flew it to Altanta and back (220 statute miles) at a gross takeoff weight of 1308 lbs (my wife and I and full standard fuel and full Aux wing fuel of 11 gal). We made the entire trip with 9 gallons left burning 5.8 gal/hr, 145 mph TAS at 5500 ft. The Corvair ran like a sewing machine!

On Sunday, July 10, 2016, at 7:25 AM, Sonex S/N 1359 flew for the first time after 5 ½ years of construction. Plane and VW performed great! N9SN received its Special Airworthiness Certificate June 28 from EAA Hall of Fame DAR Lowell Farrand. Transition training in June also made the first flight less tense with a special thanks to Bob Helm for all of the coaching from the right seat during my training/flight review over a weekend; with thanks to Kerry and Joe also for all those questions answered during the build. Big thanks to my wife for lending the sometimes needed additional hand - she is now fully cleco and pop rivet qualified - and for making my upholstery. And special thanks also to all the members of EAA Chapter 110 in Louisville for all of their help along the path of this journey.
